Teen dies after being punched, parents sue suspect and family

Two Chicago teens were on an Indiana beach together during the 2011 4th of July holiday. One of them, a 17-year-old male, died two days later in a hospital. His autopsy report said that he had died from blunt force trauma to his head. The other teen, a 19-year-old at the time, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, battery and aggravated battery for allegedly punching the 17-year-old in the head on July 4, 2011. The deceased was a resident of the community of Beverly on Chicago's South Side.

The parents of the 17-year-old have since filed a wrongful death suit in Cook County against the allegedly violent teen, his sister and his mother. According to reports, all three were on an Indiana beach when the incident happened.

Supposedly, the suspect and his sister were intoxicated on the beach the night that the punch occurred. According to reports, the young man's sister had started a disturbance that led to her brother's instigation of a fight. When the 17-year-old asked the girl's brother to calm down, he was punched in the head. Police arrived on the scene, but both the young man and his sister had been picked up by their mother.

When police arrived, the 17-year-old was unconscious.

The mother of the accused has been accused herself of blocking police from gathering evidence of underage drinking. On top of this, the lawsuit has also accused her of supplying her children with the alcohol they had consumed.

The young man who may have killed the 17-year-old is not due in court again until June of this year. His criminal proceedings will continue then.
