Pedestrian killed by taxi, relatives file suit

The death of a loved one is a traumatic loss. Not only has a beloved family member and/or friend been taken so senselessly, but survivors are often left to deal with heartbreaking feelings of grief and depression. In one such case, the brother of an 86-year-old female pedestrian who was killed in a motor vehicle accident decided to hold those responsible for her loss by filing a wrongful death suit.

According to the suit, the woman was struck in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago by a taxi. The 40-year-old cab driver was traveling west on Briar Place on Aug. 22 of last year when he went to make a left turn onto Sheridan. Reports state that his cab crashed into the 86-year-old pedestrian as she was walking east in the crosswalk. The Cook County medical examiner's office said that she was pronounced dead the next day after she was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital.

The 40-year-old driver was given two citations by police that included failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failure to use due care when a pedestrian is present. A thorough examination of the man's driving record found that several traffic tickets had been given to him, but many of them were dismissed. Because of this, regulators were not aware of the man's potentially dangerous driving habits.

The woman, of the 3500 block of North Lake Shore Drive, was survived by her brother. He was not the individual who filed the suit, another relative was. According to the suit, her brother lost the woman's guidance, affection, love, companionship and support.

Both the taxi driver and his employer were named as defendants. The lawsuit seeks $100,000 in damages from each of them. Attempts to contact a representative of either of the defending parties for comment were unsuccessful.
