Drivers, insurance company accused of couple's wrongful death

An accident in Edwardsville, Illinois, took the lives of two people. The crash happened during June of this year. Since then, the estate of the deceased individuals has filed a wrongful death suit against the other drivers involved in the crash, as well as the insurance company that covered one of them.

The deceased couple was from Bethalto, Illinois. The man was 80-years-old and his wife was 78. According to reports, the couple was driving in an eastbound van on the Berm Highway, which is also known as River Heritage Parkway and Illinois Route 143. They were near Wood River Creek when one of the other drivers was heading west in a pickup truck. That driver was attempting to turn left into a parking area on the southern side of the highway.

The other driver named as a defendant was traveling west in a Honda CR-V at the same time. The female driver struck the rear of the pickup truck while it was waiting to turn left-this caused the truck to enter into oncoming traffic. The truck and the van carrying the elderly couple collided head-on soon after the truck was rear-ended.

The 80-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene while his 78-year-old wife was flown via medical helicopter to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to authorities, the area where the accident happened was a tricky one. Many people would try to turn left there even though the highway had a speed limit of 55 mph. A traffic light further down would have allowed the pickup truck driver to turn left without worrying about being rear-ended. Instead, the suit has accused him of stopping in the fast lane of a 55 mph zone and failing to use the traffic light that would have allowed for a safer left turn.

The driver of the Honda has been accused of failing to change lanes, failing to drive in the right-hand lane, failing to avoid the pickup truck, failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and following too closely.
