Fatal truck accident: 7 killed after truck slams into Jeep

A horrific accident earlier this month served as a reminder to the sheer destruction and devastation that can stem from a truck accident.

The accident happened on Aug. 16. A Jeep, with four children and three adults inside, was traveling northbound on the interstate behind a tractor-trailer when the two approached a work zone. The first tractor-trailer and the Jeep slowed as nearing the work zone.

However, a second tractor-trailer, which was behind the Jeep, did not slow. In fact, according to a state police sergeant, there is no indication that the second truck even attempted to stop before plowing into the back of the Jeep.

The Jeep ended up sandwiched between the two tractor-trailers and burst into flames. The first officer on the scene reported the flames were 30 feet high, which would mean the Jeep was fully engulfed. All seven people inside the Jeep were killed.

At this point, since there were no skid marks on the roadway, it is believed the second tractor-trailer smashed into the Jeep at highway speeds.

If it turns out this is true, one has to wonder why there was no attempt to stop. Was the truck driver not paying attention? Was he over-worked or under the influence? Or was he simply not paying attention? Or -- outside of truck driver error -- was there some sort of mechanical issue with the truck? Did the brakes simply fail?

These are the types of questions that will need to be answered. The answers will provide insight into just who should be held responsible.
