Serious crash leaves one dead, three injured

Three people are injured and another is dead following a three-car accident on an expressway in Chicago. A trooper with the Illinois State Police's Chicago department said the fatal accident occurred as one driver attempted to move into a different lane. At the same time, another car tried to move into the same lane, causing the vehicles to strike each other's sides. The trooper said both lane changes were conducted improperly.

After the initial collision, the first driver lost control of his car, which drifted across several lanes of traffic before being struck by a sport utility vehicle. Both the car and the SUV then struck a concrete barrier. This caused the car to overturn, ejecting its driver from the vehicle. The driver of the flipped vehicle was not wearing a seat belt during the car accident and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled, but authorities do not currently believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

With the exception of one individual, the passengers and drivers of all the other vehicles involved in the wreck were taken to receive treatment at area medical centers. Details of their injuries were not released, but a media spokesperson announced that all four victims were listed in serious to critical condition. According to the police report, all the victims were wearing seat belts.

The trooper with the ISP told reporters he did not know whether any citations or charges had been filed in connection with the incident. The accident will remain under police investigation.
