Parents file suit after Megabus crash kills daughter

The Megabus crash that occurred on Aug. 2 near Litchfield, Illinois, has spawned multiple lawsuits. According to reports, at least six suits have been filed due to emotional and physical injuries sustained during the automobile accident. Many of those suits allege negligence on the part of Megabus, the driver, Coach Leasing or some combination of the three parties.

Reports indicate that the Megabus crash happened when a double-decker bus carrying 81 passengers collided with a concrete support pillar underneath a bridge. The collision injured a total of 47 passengers and killed a 25-year-old graduate student attending the University of Missouri. She and her parents were traveling home to Columbia, Missouri, after spending a week in metropolitan Chicago.

During the crash, the 25-year-old was fatally wounded and her parents were there with her. Since then, they have chosen to file a wrongful death suit against the driver, Coach Leasing and Megabus. According to that document, both parents are emotionally traumatized by the loss of their daughter.

The family is originally from Mumbai, India. The 25-year-old graduate student had been studying health administration in the U.S. for approximately a year when she was killed. Some of the allegations made by the family in the suit suggest that all parties involved failed to properly inspect and maintain the bus and its tires. According to authorities, a blown tire may have been the major cause of the crash. But the Illinois State Police also added that driver error did not seem to be a contributing factor.

After the accident, Megabus released a statement saying that each of the buses are inspected every 10 days -- the bus involved in the crash had reportedly been reviewed within the previous week.

The parents' lawsuit claims wrongful death, negligence and infliction of emotional distress. There are 24 counts in the suit and damages totaling $1.2 million.
