Visibility problems are not uncommon for nighttime drivers. Some Cook County car and truck drivers complain motorcycles are hard to see any time of day. Motorists frequently forget about or refuse to pay attention to vehicles with anything less than four wheels.
Drivers of larger vehicles often dismiss the notion that motorcyclists have equal rights to the use of Illinois roads. This subconscious or willful lack of recognition also causes car and truck drivers to misjudge the speed and distance of motorcycles surrounding them.
A driver whose response time and judgment is impaired by alcohol is a danger to himself and every other person on or near the road. Motorcyclists may be especially vulnerable since two-wheeled vehicles lack the protection that larger vehicles have.
A young man was killed in a recent crash in Rockford. Police reported the 25-year-old motorcyclist was the victim of an accident involving an intoxicated driver. Authorities said the at-fault driver was turning at an intersection when his minivan struck the bike.
The motorcyclist’s helmet was knocked free from his head during the crash. The bike rider was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to accident injuries.
The minivan driver was charged with DUI. New charges may be added once the police investigation is complete.
Motorcyclists are aware many passenger car and truck drivers ignore or even scorn them. To combat a motorcycle’s lack of conspicuousness, bike riders frequently employ defensive driving skills and wear light-colored and protective gear. These precautions provide little protection from drivers who have total disregard for the safety of others.
Motorcycle accident injuries and deaths are unfortunate, everyday occurrences except to crash victims and their families. Plaintiffs in personal injury and wrongful death claims endure tremendous but compensable physical, emotional and financial hardships.
Drunk driving is a negligent act whether or not it is intentional. Juries award damages to plaintiffs harmed by thoughtless driver behaviors.
