The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 172 Illinois employees died from workplace injuries in 2013, an increase of 26 fatalities over the previous year. The figure represented a significant improvement over the worker death rate of 262 in 1996, but remained far higher than 2012, when on-the-job deaths hit a record low of 146. Just over 4,400 worker deaths were recorded nationwide.

There is actually a federal agency tasked with keeping those numbers. Under the direction of the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics is the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.
